David Francis graduated with a medical degree from Monash University in 2002 and has since worked as a general hospital doctor in Melbourne, Geelong and Perth. David undertook research to complete a Master of Surgery degree through the University of Melbourne and the Centre for Eye Research Australia in 2006.

The topic of the Master of Surgery research was tissue engineering and stem cell biology, more specifically growing corneal epithelium from limbal stem cells. David trained in ophthalmology through the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital and went on to complete a fellowship in corneal and anterior segment surgery at the Eye and Ear Hospital. David has published ophthalmic research in peer reviewed journals in addition to presenting research at national and international ophthalmology conferences.

David started working in Ballarat at the start of 2014 and is currently living in Ballarat with his wife and three children. In addition to working at the Ballarat Eye Clinic, David works as a visiting consultant at the Ballarat Base Hospital and as a Consultant surgeon at the Cornea Unit at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital. He performs Corneal Crosslinking and various forms of corneal grafting in Ballarat.

David is also a visiting surgeon at the Melbourne Excimer Laser Group facility in East Melbourne. David is an accredited eye surgeon and member of the Royal Australia and New Zealand College of Ophthalmology and a member of the Australian Society for Cataract and Refractive Surgeons and the Australian Cornea Society.
